Organisational changes within the law firm
Grzegorz has been with the firm for 18 years and, for some time now, has also been a general partner of the law firm alongside Grzegorz Maślanko. As of 1 July, Grzegorz Szysz has assumed the role of managing partner of the Legal Team at Grant Thornton Poland. Grzegorz specialises in corporate law and tax transaction advisory. He is an attorney-at-law and a licensed tax advisor. The impressive projects delivered by Grzegorz and the teams he has led have contributed to their dynamic development and to multiple distinctions in Polish and international rankings.
Rafał Śmigórski, who has led the law firm to date, remains with the team and will focus on business development, including projects related to onboarding new teams and leaders and further strengthening Grant Thornton’s market position in legal services.
The leadership change is accompanied by a change in the law firm’s legal name. The current name, Grant Thornton Legal Maślanko Kancelaria Prawna sp. k., is being replaced by Grant Thornton Legal Szysz sp. k. The change is organisational and administrative in nature, while market communication will continue to focus on the Grant Thornton brand and the team providing legal services as part of the group’s broader advisory offering.

I see taking responsibility for the law firm as a natural continuation of the team’s development to date. In recent years, we have consistently strengthened our capabilities and built practices that respond to the needs of entrepreneurs. The dynamic growth achieved in recent years requires greater involvement in the operational management of an increasingly large team, while maintaining the highest quality, which has always been and remains our priority. At the same time, our ambitions and plans involve further development, both organically and through cooperation with lawyers, teams and law firms that see Grant Thornton as a platform for the next stage of growth. Combining these two dimensions requires appropriate adjustment and evolution of the team’s management structure. I am pleased that, together with Rafał, the leaders of individual practices and the entire team, we are entering the next stage of building a strong and distinctive law firm on the Polish market, which is also a fantastic place to work and a development platform for top legal talent.
Growth through new practices, teams and leaders
The Legal Team at Grant Thornton Poland currently comprises approximately 50 professionals and specialises, among other areas, in advisory services for companies and entrepreneurs in corporate law, legal and tax advisory in M&A, business reorganisations, employment law including immigration law, legal due diligence, business succession, real estate and construction law, intellectual property and new technologies law, personal data protection and sports law. Although the law firm already operates on a significant scale by Polish legal market standards, it has continued to grow dynamically in recent years, at an average rate of approximately 20% per year, and is planning further stages of expansion, covering both new specialisations and new locations.
The law firm is open to discussions with law firms for which consolidation is seen as an attractive path to creating unique opportunities for dynamic growth and a change in business format, as well as with teams and leaders who have their own client relationships, an established market position and experience in serving business clients. Practices that are complementary to the current offering are of particular interest, including litigation and arbitration, competition and consumer law, as well as other areas supporting entrepreneurs in running and developing their businesses. Geographically, the firm is looking, among others, at Silesia, Lower Silesia, Warsaw, Poznań and other locations where a local presence could strengthen client relationships.

We are planning further dynamic growth. To accelerate it, we want to develop not only organically, but we are also open to cooperation with external law firms, their teams and leaders. We are looking for people and organisations that see this model as a genuine opportunity to develop their capabilities, business and market position. We are interested in collaborations where two plus two equals at least five.
Grant Thornton emphasises that this is not about traditional headhunting or aggressive acquisitions. The model is based on partnership-oriented discussions, flexible cooperation structures and joint value creation tailored to the specific profile of a given law firm, team or leader. The law firm aims to create conditions in which joining leaders retain their entrepreneurial mindset and ability to develop their own practices, while gaining access to greater scale, a recognisable brand, multidisciplinary expert support and a broad client base.

We do not approach such discussions like an investor looking to ‘buy’ someone. We want to give lawyers the opportunity to build and develop their practices within our structure, under a global brand, with access to a large client base and experts from many disciplines. In return, we broaden our offering and acquire new capabilities as a firm. This is intended to be a joint undertaking that benefits both sides.
